SEASIDE - "It took us more than three quarters to adjust to how physical the game was and by that time we had three girls banged up and two foul out," Coach Ned Bittner lamented after the Lady Fishermen lost their second overtime game in as many nights 41-39 to Seaside there Tuesday.
The Lady Gulls flocked to the foul line in the extended period, sinking eight free throws after Ilwaco had pulled even at 33-33 to end regulation play. Alexa Wirkkala, as she had been in the fourth period, was the hero for the Lady Fishermen in overtime. She scored on driving layup and a subsequent free toss with 90 seconds remaining and then canned a trey from beyond the arc with 10 seconds left to draw within 40-39 of Seaside.
After the Lady Gulls made one of two foul shots to go up 41-39, Ashley Tapio had a five-foot shot rim out at the buzzer.
Ilwaco drops to 8-4 on the season and shares the lead in the Trico League at 2-0. The Lady Gulls won the junior varsity contest 48-39.
