ASTORIA — Astoria finally reached 60 degrees Sunday afternoon, May 1, for the first time this calendar year. This is the latest occurrence of the “first 60 of the year” in the 121 years (1890-2011) that records have been kept at Astoria, according to meteorologist Steve Pierce.

The previous record was April 19, set in 1945. Similar records have been set at stations all across Washington and Oregon this spring. Astoria is the official weather-recording station nearest the Long Beach Peninsula, which experiences nearly identical weather, if not slightly cooler and wetter. Unofficially, it was 60 degress in Long Beach on April 22.
