ILWACO — The Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula is taking the reins of the Ocean Beach Education Foundation’s 26th annual auction, a community event that raises more than $50,000 to enrich local student learning programs.

The auction, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club and sponsored by the Ocean Beach Education Foundation, will be held May 19 in the historic Chinook School gymnasium.

The event typically draws about 175 to 200 attendees.

While the Boys & Girls Club will manage this year’s event, OBEF will provide assistance.

“The Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula is excited and honored to take over the Ocean Beach Education Foundation’s annual auction,” Allie Friese, Boys & Girls Club executive director, said in a press release. “We’re eager to carry forward the community-first mission of the annual auction while also putting our own touches on it. I think the Long Beach Peninsula and Pacific County can look forward to a fun, inspiring event on May 19 that will honor the OBEF’s longtime stewardship of the auction and kickoff its new incarnation under the Boys & Girls Club.”

Entering its 26th year, the Auction has historically supported expanded educational opportunities for the students of the Ocean Beach School District. That makes the transition to the Boys & Girls Club a natural fit, said OBEF President Jeff Chabot.

“The auction has benefited from the financial support of this community for many years, and thanks to this generosity, we have become self-sufficient in our ability to continue helping local schools,” Chabot said. “The board of directors of OBEF has decided that the time has come to hand off the auction to a younger group that is equally deserving of this community support. It’s our hope that the community is as generous and giving to the Boys & Girls Club as they have always been to OBEF.”

Auction-goers should expect a similar format to previous years. The May 19 event will feature a fun Willy Wonka theme, along with regular offerings of live and silent auction, paddle raises to support the Boys & Girls Club, a cash bar and catered meal.
