Ron Robbins, commander of the Don R. Gable American Legion Post 48, read out the names of the fallen at the U.S. Coast Guard Memorial at Black Lake in Ilwaco as Christopher Ault, petty officer 3rd class, U.S. Coast Guard, symbolically answered “absent.”
Members of the Oysterville Militia, an informal club, worked hard Monday to fire off a cannon in honor of Memorial Day as the audience braced their ears for the discharge. Due to technical difficulties, the blast never came.

PENINSULA — Long Beach Peninsula residents and visitors gathered Monday to remember and honor all those who have fallen in defense of our country.
Ron Robbins, commander of the Don R. Gable American Legion Post 48, presided over events that began in Surfside at 8:30 a.m. and concluded with lunch in Ilwaco. In contrast to some years, the weather was cool but otherwise pleasant, with outdoor events mostly centering around area cemeteries and flagpoles.
The Peninsula is home to many retirees from the Armed Services, and is the proud location of the U.S. National Motor Lifeboat School and U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, whose personnel participated in Memorial Day observances.
