SKAMOKOWA — Rescuers on Nov. 2 recovered the body of an elderly man from Wilson Creek near the Wahkiakum County town of Skamokowa.
Richard Snyder, 90, of Cathlamet, had been missing since Saturday. A resident of the area discovered Snyder’s empty white GMC in the creek bed, near East Valley Road, on Sunday afternoon, Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Raedyn Grasseth said on Nov. 2. It appeared that Snyder had veered off the road and tumbled down a roughly 50-foot embankment.
A search and rescue team began looking for Snyder on Sunday afternoon. They resumed the search Monday morning and found Snyder at about 10 a.m. Snyder’s body was in the water about a quarter of a mile downstream from his truck, Grasseth said.
His family was present when he was recovered from the creek. He was transported to Longview for an autopsy.
Police are still investigating the accident, but they believe it occurred as Snyder was headed home from visiting friends on East Valley Road on Saturday, Grasseth said.
The region was hit by a very heavy rainstorm over the weekend, so weather may have been a factor. Driving conditions may have been hazardous on the remote country road, and the creek was running “much higher than normal,” Grasseth said.
