ILWACO — The speed limit on Highway 101 alongside Black Lake has changed from 45 mph to 35 mph.

Coming from the north, the speed limit now transitions from 45 mph to 35 mph along Highway 101; and finally 25 mph, once in town.

Ilwaco City Council passed an ordinance to change the speed limit at its July 23 meeting.

The change had to be approved by the Washington State Department of Transportation before it could be officially put into effect.

The change was approved as an effort to make the area safer for drivers and pedestrians.

The lake is part of a popular park that attracts walkers, runners and fishermen.

The area across from the lake has become a developed residential area in the past decade.
