2 cups sugar
1 cups butter
1/4 cup each anise seeds and anise liquor
3 tablespoons whiskey
5 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 cups coarsely chopped almonds
Mix top five ingredients. Beat in eggs. Mix flour and baking powder. Stir thoroughly with first mixture. Mix in nuts.
Cover and refrigerate two hours. Better to make it the night before so flavors can blend. Directly on greased baking sheets shape dough with your hands. Shape flat loaves 1/2 inch thick and two inches wide, as long as your baking sheets, two loaves to a pan, parallel and well apart. Bake in a 375-degree oven for 20 minutes or until light brown.
Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheet.
When cool to touch, cut into diagonal slices 1/2-inches thick. Place slices close together, cut side down on baking sheet and bake at 375 for 15 minutes, or till lightly toasted. Cool on wire racks. Store airtight. This makes four or five loaves.
