ASTORIA - Chinook resident Margarete E. Clark, 70, died April 14, 2006, in Astoria. She was born May 7, 1935, in Worms, Germany, to Peter and Elizabeth (Winters) Hess.

Mrs. Clark immigrated to the United States in 1957. She could not speak English, so she used grade school books and learned to speak and read English. She became a citizen in 1963.

She married Walter Clark in Walla Walla in 1969. The couple moved to the Bremerton area in 1971, then to Chinook in 1991. While living in the Puget Sound area, the couple enjoyed spending time on the water sailing on their sailboat. Mrs. Clark was able to return to Germany four different times to visit her family. She was a housewife.

In addition to her husband, Walter, she is survived by two stepsons, Dennis Clark of Belfair and David Clark of Seattle; a stepdaughter-in-law, Sharon Clark of Bremerton; two step-granddaughters, Wendy and Sandra Clark of Bremerton; a step-great-grandson, Devin Clark of Bremerton; a brother-in-law, Ralph Clark, and sister-in-law, Lois M. Clark, both of Malaga; a niece, Debra Reed of Bremerton; a nephew, Stephen Clark of Belfair, and a sister, Hedwig Gray of Cedar Hill, Texas. One brother and three sisters living in the Worms, Germany area also survive. Her stepson, Donald Clark, preceded her in death in 2001.

At her request, no funeral service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Hughes-Ransom Cremation and Mortuaries in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
