PORT OF ILWACO - Representatives from Englund Marine Supply attended the Port of Ilwaco Commission meeting Monday to answer questions about orbital sanders they will be renting to customers of the port's boatyard. The sanders now are required under "best management practices," port Manager Mack Funk said. They help eliminate dust while sanding vessels by collecting it in bags which are then disposed of.

Dean Nelson told commissioners that Englund will buy several of the 6- to 8-inch sanders which will be available for rent for $40 per day.

Commissioners approved requiring the use of the sanders in the boat yard.

Commissioners also approved permitting a rental apartment on the second floor of the Imperial Schooner restaurant at the port. Owner Clint Carter told commissioners he will be installing an outside entrance for the apartment.

Donna Rew, president of the Pacific County Economic Development Commission, introduced Karen Tully, who will be an assistant to EDC director Kathy Russ and act as a business liaison. "Karen is a huge asset," Rew said. "She has many talents."

At the request of Port of Ilwaco Manager Mack Funk, commissioners approved offering for sale spare parts from surplus boats the port has acquired. Information about the parts is available at the port office.

Funk said the Columbia River Estuary Study Task Force has been hired to assist the port in acquiring a 10-year extension of its dredging permit.

Several people have applied to replace resigning Harbormaster Jamie Sowers, Funk said.
