Obituaries: Alma L. Harjung

TEXAS - Alma Lucille Harjung, age 85, of Long Beach, died Oct. 31, 2010, in Houston, Texas. The daughter of Leila and Olin Clements, she was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Lakeland, Fla.

She was a true "southern belle," who, although born in Florida, spent most of her life in Texas and considered herself to be a Texan. In her adult life she was a beautician and the wife of Baptist minister Joe Harjung. She served at his side in a variety of locations, including as a missionary in Mexico.

She enjoyed cooking and gardening, liked a good joke and spoke her mind freely; friends and relatives often described her as being sassy.

Mrs. Harjung moved to Long Beach in 2005 to be closer to one of her daughters and other family members, and to escape the Texas heat.

Survivors include her daughters, Pat Holtermann of Long Beach and Kay Tinker of Houston; a son, Dan Walker of Houston; two sisters, Laverne Wiley of Minden, La., and Hazel Frances Lanham of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Edward and Ralph Clements, both of Lakeland, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her husband; a son, Jim Walker; and a sister, Alene Hunter preceded her in death.

Services were held in Houston, Texas on Nov. 5. Arrangements were by Brookside Cypress Creek Mortuary.
