PORTLAND - Alma Metsala, 86, passed away Nov. 21, 2010, in Portland. The daughter of Andrew and Jennie (Keskitalo) Metsala, she was born in Astoria on Jan. 24, 1924, and grew up in Rosburg on a dairy farm.

She was a 1942 graduate of Naselle High School. After graduating at the age of 17, she moved to Portland where her first job was at the Portland shipyard. She then worked for the state of Oregon Department of Corrections, retiring in June 1991 after 39 years of service.

She continued her education while working full-time and proudly graduated from college. She loved music, singing in a choir at her retirement condominium, swimming and tennis. She was the family photographer, taking thousands of pictures of her many relatives including her nieces, nephews, friends and the subjects of her travels. She enjoyed sharing her pictures with all. She was described as a fun and loving person.

A sister, Aune Tienhaara Smith of Longview, nine nieces and five nephews survive her. Her parents; two sisters, Aura Hagland and Ailie Wallace Lee; and a son, David Stubstad, preceded her in death.

Private burial will take place at Seal River Cemetery in Rosburg.
