ILWACO - Ilwaco resident Luther E. "Luke" Miller Jr., 70, died in Ilwaco on Nov. 26, 2010. A native of Arroyo Grande, Calif., he was born there on Dec. 4, 1939, the son of Luther and Ann (Murphy) Miller, Sr. As a child he moved with his family to Roseburg, Ore. There he received his education and graduated from high school.
Following high school he worked alongside his father on oil rigs. In 1972 he moved to the Peninsula, where he began his career in the commercial fishing industry. He operated the vessel Snark, fishing local waters for salmon and tuna. In later years he operated Ed's Bait Shop in Ilwaco until retirement.
Mr. Miller was an avid poker player, enjoyed operating remote-controlled aircraft at the Ilwaco airport, and collected fishing reels, and he was happiest when he was outdoors, spending time with family and friends alike.
He married Sharon Call on July 18, 1962. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2008. Surviving are his three children: sons, Luke III of Ariel and Matt of Long Beach; daughter, Amanda Prest of Ilwaco; and seven grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held on Dec. 5 at noon at The Lamplighter in Seaview. His guest book is available at (www.penttilaschapel.com).
