PORTLAND - Walter D. Burgher, age 72, died Feb. 6, 2010, in Portland. He was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Jasper Co., Iowa, to William P. Burgher and Hazel H. Crawford Burgher.
Mr. Burgher was raised in St. Helens, Ore., and graduated from St. Helens High School in 1955. He attended the University of Oregon for a year. He then enlisted into the Marines and served from 1956-59.
On April 8, 1957, he married Barbara Blair in Honolulu, Hawaii. They lived in San Diego for a short period of time before moving to Clatsop County in 1959.
Mr. Burgher worked for the post office in Astoria until 1993 when he retired. His hobbies included being a rock hound, fishing, hunting and camping. He was the founder and president of Trails End Gem and Mineral Club.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Burgher of Astoria; daughters, Kristina Burgher of Ocean Park, and Stacey and husband Mike Cummings of Astoria; sons Paul and Tami Burgher of Clatskanie and Erik and Carole Burgher of Warrenton; grandchildren, Shannon and husband Micah Vertefeville, Kelli and Katie Burgher, Natalie, Gracie, and Luke Cummings, Matthew and Billy Jack Burgher; a brother and sister-in-law Jack and Marjorie Burgher; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Larry Hargrove. His parents and a brother preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Feb. 10, at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave. in Astoria. The funeral service will be held Feb. 11 at First Baptist Church of Warrenton, 30 NE 1st Street in Warrenton; and graveside services will be held Feb. 12, at Bethany Memorial Cemetery, 34721 Church Road, Warren, Ore.
