Head Start in Long BeachLONG BEACH - Sherry Berteaux, center supervisor at Long Beach Head Start recently announced that there are some openings in the Head Start program.

"Several children who were enrolled at our Head Start in Long Beach have moved out of the area. Because the program is so flexible, children can be enrolled mid-year. We have openings right now we'd love to fill before the end of April," Berteaux said.

Head Start is a proven program to prepare children for kindergarten and continued success in elementary grades. In south Pacific County, Educational Opportunities for Children and Families offers free preschool for income-eligible 3- and 4-year-olds. Head Start particularly welcomes children with special needs or disabilities and works closely with the Ocean Beach School District to provide services.

In addition to preschool classes, Head Start includes nutritious meals and snacks, and transportation on the Peninsula, within neighborhood boundaries, to and from the Head Start Center in Long Beach. A variety of support services can be customized to assist families, both children and parents.

Long Beach & Ocean Park ECEAPPENINSULA - The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) provides a no cost preschool program for children who have turned 3-years-old on or before Aug. 31, 2003, or 4-years-old on or before Aug. 31, 2002. Students from low-income families may apply for participation beginning immediately or in the fall of 2006.

The ECEAP program provides free preschool classes are available in Long Beach and in Ocean Park for eligible families; it also offers transportation and nutritious meals; health, dental and developmental screenings; and fun, family activities. Benefits of this program are available to all children without regard to race, color, national origin or handicapping condition.
