Success Story: Lions Club awards scholarship to Karnofski

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach Lions Club is proud to announce this year's winner of the club's $2,000 Second Year Scholarship to Ericka Karnofski.

When it is suggested that young people are not getting a good education, those making those remarks should have the opportunity to review scholarship applications received each year. The Ocean Beach School District produces some really outstanding students that go on to college.

Ericka Karnofski was chosen from five applicants. She is attending Lower Community College in Longview.

Ericka was the December Student of the Month in the 2000-01 school year. Students of the Month have to be seniors, and they are picked each month during the school year by school instructors, and not by the Long Beach Lions Club. A student of the month must attend college for a year before applying, and although there are other seniors that are named students of the month by school staff, they must be "Lions" students of the month to apply.

Over the years, through the sale of fireworks, and Christmas garland, the Long Beach Lions Club has been able to provide a "second year scholarship" to an outstanding student. The support the Lions receive from the community makes programs like this one possible. The program wouldn't be possible without the great cooperation received from the high school. The Chinook Observer, a great supporter of our young people, gives each Student of the Month a spot in the paper. The Long Beach Lions Club would like to thank you all.

Donate to Elks' Christmas Basket program

LONG BEACH - It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner.

The Long Beach Elks will again be delivering Christmas baskets to the needy of our community this year.

The baskets will contain a complete Christmas dinner, plus gifts for children under twelve years of age. Also included will be canned goods, paper and soap products donated from businesses and the community.

Donation barrels are located in the Elks Lodge, at Sid's Market, Ilwaco Market and Pioneer Market.

If you would like to make a dollar donation, please make checks payable to Elks Christmas Baskets, and mail them to P.O. Box 370, Long Beach, WA 98631.
