The driver of the pickup truck struck head-on in Wednesday’s fatal crash on the Astoria Bridge has been upgraded to fair condition.

Chris Levno, 57, of Kelso, Wash., is recovering from “extensive leg injuries” at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, after being trapped in the truck that dangled over the Columbia River for more than an hour.

Oregon State Police are continuing to investigate the crash that killed 27-year-old Nolan Neal Benson of Long Beach, Wash.

Although the investigation is yet to be completed, troopers believe Benson may have fallen asleep, when he crossed the centerline and struck Levno.

“He drifted over the centerline and we don’t know why,” said OSP Sgt. Andrew Merila. “There was no braking, no swerving, which is consistant to falling asleep.”

It will be about a month to conclude whether drugs or alcohol were a factor, Merila said.
