MEGLER - The Coast Guard suspended active search efforts for a man reported missing while swimming off a boat in the Columbia River near Hungry Harbor on Sunday evening, May 23.

Tony Gwerder, 34, of Raymond was on a sturgeon fishing trip in the lower Columbia River. His fishing partners lost sight of him at about 4:30 p.m., and called 911. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Group/Air Station Astoria was dispatched in addition to a 47-foot motor lifeboat and a 23-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment. Intensive searches blanketed the area for over 4.5 hours before stopping due to darkness. Additional searches have been suspended pending further developments.
