CATHLAMET - Mr. Roy Waino West, 75, of Cathlamet, died Jan. 19, 2003 in Longview. The son of Otto and Mary (Hovila) West, he was born Sept. 15, 1927 in Chehalis.

Mr. West graduated from Ilwaco High School in 1945 and moved to Cathlamet in 1960. On Jan. 22, 1973 he married Marie Gackstatter.

Mr. West managed a tree farm at Buckhorn Mountain at one time, and received the Tree Farmer of the Year award.

He was a journeyman lineman, and worked for Pacific County P.U.D. and then Wahkiakum County P.U.D. for all his working years, until retiring in the mid-70s. He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II.

He was active in directing and counseling junior boys at the Dunes Bible Camp at Ocean Park for over 20 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping and liked to work around his house.

Survivors include his wife, Marie at home; sons: Gordon Souvenir of Cathlamet and Steven Souvenir of Clatskanie, Ore.; daughters: Sharlene Gray of Long Beach, Cynthia Kapron of Gig Harbor, Janet Bryan of Longview, Leota Souvenir of Cathlamet and Karen Posey of Benecia, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Leonard West in 1973.

Viewing will be on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Dowling Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Jan. 22 at 3 p.m. at the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Cathlamet, with Rev. Scott Mitchell officiating. A private interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.
