CHINOOK - Ryan L. Guggisberg, 30, formerly of Chinook passed away May 14, 2004, off Wallace Island near Cathlamet. He was camping with his wife, brother and friend. On May 14 he tried to swim to his boat which had drifted to the middle of the Columbia River and lost his life.

He was born May 12, 1974.

Spending time on the river with his wife, Brenda, and time with his brother and best friend, Michael, was one of his greatest joys. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, spending time with friends, and his two Pug dogs, Sweetie and Oscar.

Mr. Guggisberg moved to Vancouver in 1995. He most recently worked at the Cascade Park Animal Hospital as a veterinarian technician.

He is preceded in death by his father, Don Guggisberg of Chinook. Survivors include his grandparents, Virgil and Millie Guggisberg of Chinook, his brother, Michael Guggisberg of Chinook, his mother, Carly Monkman of Milwaukee, Wis., and his wife, Brenda Guggisberg and their unborn child of Vancouver.

Memorial services were held in Vancouver on May 19. One of his favorite sayings was read at the service, "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly."
