GIG HARBOR - Sarah "Sally" Carlson, 86, died March 19, 2004, in Gig Harbor. She was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Roanoke, Va.

In 1941 she graduated as a registered nurse and served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Navy until 1946. She obtained her master's degree from the University of North Carolina and enjoyed a distinguished career as a public health official, teacher and college lecturer.

In her professional career she will be remembered for her dedication to professional standards, her strong teaching and lecturing skills and her keen interest in her patients. Throughout her years, she undertook many humanitarian interests and has been a blessing to many people. She will be most remembered for her love and as an inspiration to her children. She will be greatly missed by all.

Mrs. Carlson was married to Melvin Charles Carlson for 54 years until his death on July 25, 2003.

Surviviors include her three children: Martha Woods of Gig Harbor, Peter Carlson of Naselle and Steve Carlson of Jerome, Idaho; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to the Boy Scouts of American, the American Cancer Society or the Mesothelioma Society.
