NASELLE - The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors extended Gerald Schmidtke's superintendent of schools contract for another year at its regular meeting held May 20. The 4-1 roll call vote extended Schmidtke's contract through the 2003-04 school year.

In other personnel action, the board accepted resignations from three coaches; hired Berniece Helton to teach the summer school program at the elementary school; approved summer school teacher contracts at NYCS.

The board also: Recognized Barbara Swanson with a certificate for her outstanding job with the "Music Man Junior"; adopted the 2003-04 calendars for NYCS and the public schools; voted to have board member Gilbert Haataia serve as the board's legislative representative.

The board also discussed the physical education curriculum; heard from Ken Emo about the voc. ed agriculture program; approved the summer swimming program.

In his report Gerald Schmidtke estimated an ending cash fund at $172,292 with a current enrollment of 302.37 public school students and an NYCS enrollment of 144 students.
