PENINSULA - According to Ocean Beach School District business manager Linda Thompson, the district bucked a downward trend in the month of March and saw a modest four student increase in student population, raising the total to 951 students.
"We're very pleased to see that," said Thompson, who added that last April the district lost 10 students. Thompson said that prior to this last month she had been uncertain if her projection of 900 for next year's budget was conservative enough. With this gain, she said she now feels it still is. The district budgeted for 920 students this year - the yearly average thus far is 967 despite a sizeable decline since the beginning of the year.
At its recent meeting, the school board passed a resolution giving superintendent Houser the authority to reduce or eliminate programs, activities, services and staff as he deems appropriate to fit next year's budget.
