LONG BEACH - Sithia "Helen" Mercer died Aug. 3, 2003 in Long Beach at the age of 86. Born in Lebanon, Mo., on Aug. 4, 1917, she was one of 13 children of Marshall Williams and Annabelle (Shrivers) Williams. During her childhood she lived on the family farm in Lebanon and attended the local schools.

She was a nurse at Madigan Army Hospital for a number of years. She had also owned and operated a restaurant in Tillamook and the Chinook Cafe in Chinook.

In 1967 she married Lee Mercer in Vancouver. In late 1968 the couple moved to Long Beach, where they resided at the time of her death.

She attended the Assembly of God Church and found strength in her religion. A very kind hearted person she would do anything for anyone. She enjoyed her home and family, liked people, especially children, was an extremely good cook, liked to crochet and was an accomplished seamstress.

Survivors include her husband Lee of Long Beach; sons James Schmid of Indiana and Larry Schmid of Vancouver; brothers Marion Williams and Junior Williams of Hartford City, Ind.; sisters Rose McCoy of Las Vegas, Nev., and Irene Williams of Hartford City, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. At her last family reunion 230 people attended.

Cremation has been held. No public service is scheduled and a private family memorial service will be held. Arrangements by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
