Students learn to be “authors for a day”

Author Petra Mather came and spent the day talking and reading with kids at Ocean Park School recently. Students spent the last few weeks gearing up for the day, and they all received a special composition book and 'I love writing' pencil to encourage our budding young authors.

OCEAN PARK — Reading is FUNdamental! To promote the love of reading throughout the summer, the Friends Of Ocean Park School (FOOPS) is sponsoring a school-wide book drive for gently used and new books.

Research has shown a decrease in reading skills over the summer months, especially in low-income families. FOOPS’ response: Get books into the hands of kids! The group is looking to the community to help. Simply bring new or gently used books and place them in the donation boxes in the Ocean Park Elementary School office.

The goal is to send each Ocean Park student home with at least 10 books each for the summer. By making this drive an annual event, students start in kindergarten and continue through the sixth grade, and leave for middle school with a personal library of at least 70 books!

Parents and friends of the school, as well as members of local quilt groups, have volunteered fabric and sewing skills to sew a book bag for each student to carry their books home.

The students have also been given library card applications to complete in order to access the many wonders of our local libraries during the summer months. FOOPS received a Wellspring grant this spring to assist with funding this goal as well as support from local groups in our community.

If you have been looking to clean out some of your bookshelves this spring (to make room for more) please keep Ocean Park School in mind. They will take books for students in kindergarten through seventh grade.
