A man who was wanted on a felony warrant for deserting from the U.S. Coast Guard led law enforcement officers on a chase Thursday that began on the east side of Astoria and ended in Olney.

Kyler Brian James Martin, 20, of 26 Halsey Road, Astoria, is set to be arraigned today in Clatsop County Circuit Court on two counts of attempting to elude police with a vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and interfering with a police officer.

The incident began shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday when a school bus driver reported a man was slumped over in the front seat of a red Buick parked at 45th and Lief Erikson Drive. The Astoria Fire Department was dispatched in case the man required emergency medical help and Astoria police also responded. When they arrived, Martin took off in his car. Astoria police determined Martin was wanted on a warrant as a Coast Guard deserter and began pursuing him.

An Oregon State Police sergeant and two Clatsop County Sheriff's deputies and a CCSO K-9 unit joined the chase as Martin drove across town on Irving Avenue, then down Williamsport Road to Oregon Highway 202 to milepost 9 near the Olney store.

There, Martin got out of his car but left it in gear. The car crashed through a fence as Martin ran through a field with officers, including Astoria Officer Chris McNeary, OSP Sgt. Andrew Merila, Dep. Robert Townsend and Dep. Ken McCoy and his specially trained dog, Chieba, running after him.

At one point, officers shot Martin with a taser gun, but the darts hit his coat and he kept running until the dog and Dep. Townsend and Sgt. Andrew Merila ran him down behind a barn and took him into custody. Martin was lodged at Clatsop County Jail.
