ILWACO - The U.S. Coast Guard had a busy weekend, assisting over 20 boaters with broken down vessels get back to shore safely.
The Coast Guard responded to two mayday calls Saturday from vessels reportedly taking on water.
The first, called in at 11:45 a.m., was from a 17-foot pleasure craft near Desdemona Sands. After a boat from Station Cape Disappointment couldn't get close enough to tow the small vessel, a jet boat owned by a good Samaritan was used to free the boat and tow it into port.
The second, a 16-foot pleasure craft, called in from near Buoy 3 at 1:15 p.m. Station Cape Disappointment sent a 25-foot small response boat to the scene, and they were able to de-water the nearly submerged vessel. It was then towed to Ilwaco.
On Sunday alone, Station Cape Disappointment reported nine calls to help disabled vessels.
