Vaulter flies into a vanilla sky

RAINIER — The races may have been over, but the battle for air supremacy continued on into the night at the District IV Track and Field Championships. Ilwaco’s Josh Berteaux set a personal record by clearing 13-feet-3 in the boys pole vault, eventually placing second and advancing to the state championships.

“Josh had a duel with Ryan Kulla from La Center that went on for 40 minutes after all the other competitors were done,” said IHS assistant coach Ned Bittner.

Coach Sarah Taylor said, “The pole vault was very fun to watch. It was dark, but Josh and Kulla really battled it out to the end.”

Berteaux now has the fourth best height in the state in the 1A boys pole vault.
