NASELLE - An impressive program honoring military veterans from the local area was held in the Naselle School Commons on Friday, Nov. 8.
The American Legion Auxiliary, the Cub Scouts, presentations by several student groups from the Naselle-Grays River Valley schools, and remarks by a general from McChord Field were all featured in the program.
The annual ceremony, which coincides with the national Veterans Day observation, is a time when the area's military veterans are recognized for their contribution to our nation.
From the posting of the colors to the retiring of the colors by the local Cub Scout troop, the program focused on the deeds of America's veterans, and especially of the 30 local veterans who were in attendance and were presented to the assembly by members of the Naselle High School National Honor Society.
Ed Wirkkala of Rosburg, a World War II veteran of the European theatre of action, said, "It was a very nice program. It gave the kids something to think about, of the things that we went through in order to save what we have."
Lyle Patterson of Naselle, a veteran of the Korean War, helped to coordinate the program and was responsible for securing the services of the speaker, Major General Scoggins of McChord Air Force Base.
