Zoella M. (Colson) Jackson

LONG BEACH - Long time resident Zoella M. (Colson) Jackson, 84, died Aug. 12, 2005, at her Long Beach residence. The daughter of Ira and Zoe (King) Smith, she was born March 3, 1921, in Tillamook, Ore.

She attended local schools and graduated from Tillamook High School where she was a popular student and a member of the cheerleading squad. Following high school, she attended beauty college and married Frank Hediger. They later divorced.

She lived in Vancouver for many years and with her husband Hugh J. Colson raised their three children. Together they owned and operated Colson's Ranch and Rendering Service, were active members of the Clark County Saddle Club and owned race horses at Portland Meadows in the 1950s through 1960s. In the late 1960s, they joined the Willamette Yacht Club where they made many wonderful friends and participated in the first fleet of Christmas ships cruising the Columbia River. In later years they owned and operated the Long Beach City Center Motel until Hugh's death in 1978. At the time of his passing they had been happily married for almost 28 years.

In 1982 she married Earl G. Jackson and they settled in Long Beach. During the 23 years of their marriage, Mrs. Jackson enjoyed being a wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Lady Elks of Long Beach and the Ocean Park Eagles. She enjoyed beachcombing, traveling, bingo, and her daily card games with her husband. Most of all she loved to laugh and always added a sense of fun to any outing she graced with her presence. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and adored each and every new addition to her family. Her family will remember her as a loving and caring woman with integrity, class, and an independent spirit, whose sense of humor never faltered even in the face of life's hardships. She will be greatly missed but remembered eternally with much love and gratitude for the lessons she taught us all.

In addition to her husband Earl, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rod and Sarah Colson and Hugh E. and Patty Colson; a daughter and son-in-law, Beckey and Scott Bjerke all of Vancouver; sister Gladys Smith of Portland, Ore.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews; a large and loving family of in-laws; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh J. Colson and her brother, Ira "Elvin" Smith.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 19 at 2:30 p.m., at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. A fellowship reception follows at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her name to the Long Beach Elks to be designated for cancer and diabetes research and funding programs. Contributions can be directed in care of Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, P.O. Box 417, Long Beach, WA 98631.
