BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — Jack Whealdon 88, passed away peacefully at home on Bainbridge Island, surrounded by his family. He was born to Dan and Evelyn Whealdon in McGowan, Wash.
He attended grade school in Chinook, Wash. and graduated from Ilwaco High School in 1944.
Jack served in the U.S. Navy, attending the Aviation Pilot Training Program in Albuquerque, NM. He later attended Washington State University and graduated with a degree is Business Administration.
Jack met the love of his life, Mildred, in Ilwaco, Wash., where she taught second grade at Ilwaco Grade School. They were married at St. Anthony’s church in Tigard, Ore. They raised seven children in Bellevue; then moved to Bainbridge Island where they have lived the past 50 years.
Jack began his career with Valvoline Oil, and then went to work for Boeing. He then worked for Raychem Corporation for over 30 years and was involved in Aerospace products sales, managing the northwest division office out of Bellevue, Wash. His final working years were for Whealdon Company Incorporated as a consultant for several manufacturers. During his high school and early college years Jack worked for the Chinook Packing Co. and was a deckhand on the fish tender the Man O’War.
In his early years on Bainbridge Island, Jack enjoyed coaching football and working with kids. He was an avid WSU Cougar fan, and loved to attend his grandchildren’s activities, sporting events and graduations. Jack’s (almost) full-time hobby was his vegetable garden, which he loved. If he grew too much, he gave the extras away. Jack was lifetime member of the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle.
Jack was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Whealdon Hornig and Joan Whealdon Ames, and by a granddaughter, Colleen Whealdon-Haught. Surviving are his wife, Mildred; his children, Mary (Rob), Beth (Tom), Dan (Lynn), Tim (Kathy), Margaret, Tom (Melody), and Nancy (Robert); 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will take place on Oct. 17 at the Poulsbo Yacht Club, 18129 Fjord Drive, NE, #T, Poulsbo, WA, 98370, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be served.
