Mary Spackman

ASTORIA — Mary Spackman, 93, of Naselle died Sept. 21, 2013, in Astoria following a stroke. Mary was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., and lived in Wheaton, Ill.; Hastings, Mich. and Mesa, Ariz. before moving to Naselle six years ago to live with her daughter, Karen. She was a mother, homemaker and active participant in community organizations. In her 40s she started a successful career in banking and retired at 65 as a branch manager.

Mary was a lifelong Cubs baseball fan and a very kind and gentle person to whom people would tell their life stories at the drop of a hat.

She was married for almost 60 years to her high-school sweetheart, William Spackman; for the last 30 years of his life, she supported him as he struggled with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis.

Mary is survived by her daughter Karen Spackman and son-in-law Douglas Kess of Naselle and their daughter Elizabeth Spackman of Kigali, Rwanda; her daughter, Claire Spackman of St Kitts, West Indies; her son, David Spackman of Chicago; his children and grandchildren as well as a nephew and several nieces.

In accordance with her stated wishes her body has been donated to science and there will be no memorial service.
