ILWACO — Patricia (Pat) McAfee, 77, died on Sept. 11, 2011, at her Ilwaco home. Born May 20, 1934, in Gary, Ind. She lived in just about every state and several countries, including Australia, before settling on the Long Beach Peninsula and Ilwaco. As a decade-long resident, she was widely known locally and in Astoria as “Pilgrim Pat.”

She completed a master’s degree in education at Indiana University and later taught special education in various locations, including Oregon and Australia. She was president of the Sierra Hiking Club and Avon’s Presidents Club. She became an instructor of Tai Chi Chu and practiced yoga. During her time in Ilwaco, she volunteered at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau and established the video-DVD lending library at the Astoria Senior Center. She was also active in the ENCORE Senior Learning Program. She loved travel, Dixieland jazz, movies, learning, and all sorts of humor.

Survivors include her brothers, Don McAfee in Washington and Jim McAfee in Indiana; her daughter, Lynn Walsh of the New York City metro area; her son, Michael Jesser of New Jersey; and many friends from all over the world.
