Voters should endorse good news about schools by renewing Ocean Beach's and Naselle's maintenance and operations levies.

Responsible for about one-fifth of local educational spending, M&Os are a routine rite of citizenship in nearly every school district in a state that funds only about 80 percent of educational programs.

Property assessments have risen a lot on the Peninsula and around Naselle in recent years. Both of these M&O renewals are conservatively designed efforts to keep vital funds flowing.

The Ocean Beach district is seeking an additional small levy to buy new computers and software. At a cost of about 17 cents per $1,000 starting in 2009, this will help level the playing field between our beautiful but isolated coastline and the rest of the technologically sophisticated Pacific Northwest.

You can vote for these levies in the currently ongoing balloting anytime up through Feb. 19. It makes no difference whether you are Republican, Democrat or Independent - all levy votes will be counted.

These school districts are working hard to deserve our trust and support. Good things are happening that we all need to encourage and reward.
