Letter: Goforth going forth to Yokosuka, Japan

Goforth going forth to Yokosuka, Japan

Just wanted to let the patrons of the Ilwaco Post Office know they’ve been some of the most outstanding customers I’ve ever had the pleasure of serving. My time with the USPS has come to an end. Don’t fret though — my top notch clerk Denise and Long Beach Post Office’s wonderful clerk Beverly will take excellent care of you!

After 14 years I have resigned from USPS and accepted a position with the Department of the Navy, heading their Navy base post office in Yokosuka, Japan. Yokosuka is home to the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet. The base is technically FISC, the Fleet Industrial Supply Center of Yokosuka, and supports the Navy’s mission of managing millions of square miles of Pacific Ocean territory. Think USS Carl Vinson. My new post office will serve 20 times the Ilwaco population, a huge challenge I happily embrace.

I’m also working on arrangements to voluntarily assist teenage orphans of the March 11 tsunami in Japan. While my sons are busy graduating right now, there are other young men and women in Japan that desperately need a shoulder to cry on and some parental company. I hope to help on my days off, catching the bullet train to wherever they are currently staying. I’ll miss Ilwaco, the Peninsula, my boys, my house, my pets.

But my philosophy is this: “The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be.”

 — Isaac Asimov

Good luck Ilwacoans, in all your future endeavors!
