In an online article in the Chinook Observer posted on Oct. 15, Rep. Herrera-Beutler states, “...it’s time to reopen the government and ensure we don’t default on our debt. I will not vote for poison pills that have no chance of passing the Senate or being signed into law.”

How hypocritical! Our representative has been off work for months at full pay, utilizing the wonderful health benefits she has as a member of Congress. I do not begrudge her this, and I am happy for her that she was able to have these benefits.

Yet she was able to fly back to Washington, D.C. and did indeed vote for a “poison pill that had no chance of passing the Senate or being signed into law” when she voted to shut down the government unless the Affordable Care Act was defunded. She then left D.C. and has been sitting on the sidelines letting her fellow Republicans do the dirty work of trying to deny other Americans the same health benefits that kept her daughter alive, will enable her to keep her daughter on her health insurance until her daughter is 26, and will prevent her daughter from being denied her own health insurance because of her pre-existing condition.

Now, when it is clear that the majority of Americans are angry at the Republicans for all this, she’s washing her hands of the whole affair. Shame on you, Jaime Herrera-Beutler!
