This is an open letter to the selfish jerk who shot off fireworks in front of my house July 5. Starting at 10 p.m., and for about an hour, the "rockets' red glare" shone through my windows and the windows of the five houses on our short street. This was not a children's display with sparklers and hissing small rounds. This was a cheap adult display with mortars and "bombs bursting in air" in 10-minute rounds for the better part of an hour.
I don't know who originated this assault, but I know who it wasn't! It wasn't the lady a block over whose autistic child loses it when a balloon breaks. It wasn't the guy on the other side who doesn't speak about it, but who still finds himself face down on the bedroom carpet when explosions bring back the PTSD symptoms from the war. It certainly wasn't anyone who has to get up to work in the morning.
What an arrogant and selfish thing to do, to destroy the peace of a quiet, residential neighborhood for your own thoughtless entertainment. This kind of entitlement is a characteristic of both mental illness and sociopathic behavior.
What's wrong with you? Did you have a mother? Didn't she teach you to think about others?
Get a permit, go down to the beach and drink yourself sick! If you want to celebrate the joy of independence, make a substantial contribution to the war veterans' organization. Poll your neighbors to see if they might be interested in having a block party. Get out of yourself long enough to find out what the results of your actions are to others' lives.
I am thoroughly disgusted with your indulgent selfishness which resulted in a loss of peace and safety and domestic tranquility - which is what our independence is all about.
By the way, I live in the gray house at the end of the cul-de-sac in case you want to come over and apologize.
EDITOR'S NOTE: According to state law, it is illegal to shoot off fireworks after 9 p.m. on July 5.
