Highly Capable (HiC) is a group of talented kids in Long Beach and Ocean Park schools. We do extra work, but in a fun way! There are field studies and we learn things we didn't already know, for a change. Since this year in Hi-C we are doing our S.O.O.P. (Stewards of our Peninsula) project. I'd like to talk about composting, the three Rs (reducing, reusing, and recycling) and other ways to help our environments.
Composting is a good way to help recycle biodegradable products like leaves and scraps of food, but only food like the grains and breads, fruits and veggies. No meat allowed. Did you know that composting can save money also? It would reduce the amount of garbage so the garbage truck wouldn't have to come quite as often. Third, after awhile the compost would turn into mulch/soil and the science classes could study the mulch/soil.
The three Rs are important because they all help cut down on wastage of things that can be used again. When you recycle something that is recyclable, it is made into another thing, sort of like reusing. Reusing is like when you get hand-me-down clothes. The clothes get used by one person and then reused by another. Reduce is to make smaller. You can reduce the amount of garbage produced by composting. Less garbage is better!
Another good way to help the earth out is by using transportation powered by yourself, like a bicycle. You can also take public transportation. Public transportation lessens the amount of gas released into the air.
Everyone should help by composting, reducing, reusing and recycling or using other transportation than just a single person in a car. A little effort goes a long way.
