We all long to go home to a place many of us have never been. Home is a safe place, a loving place filled with acceptance - something many have not had. Community.
Somewhere there is a place we can speak with compassion without words getting stuck in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will greet us with kindness. This is community. Community means the strength of joining together to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free and safe.
Once long ago, community existed. The Statue of Liberty boasts of that America. Liberty, justice, equality, and freedom. If we dream we can think we are there. Home.
In that America everything speaks with passion; the fields, the mountains, the trees, the birds, the children, and yes, even the adults. The America of the give-a-way has hands overflowing with abundance to fill every empty belly, a generous heart that doesn't ask for returns. The America that takes in strays and her people know how to stick together. They know how to laugh and they know how to love, they do not judge.
Not long ago, I too searched for home. I have found that home in the Naselle-Grays River area. I have been blessed with people who have a sense of community and strive to be strong in their support of one another. I am amazed at the kindness and love that abounds here and ever so grateful to play a part. As a New Year is born, I offer thanks to all, blessings for the new year, and all the years that follow. To say to others, remember community. Take a chance, reach out and share. Give others the safety of community and remember the long ago vision of America.
