Every five minutes on TV there seems to be an ad deriding Initiative 522 regarding labeling food products using genetically modified organisms (GMOs). If you read the names of the top five contributors, they are Grocery Manufacturers Association, Monsanto Company, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences LLC, Bayer CropScience, whose primary interest is their own bottom line. One of these ads complains about the financial burdens that farmers will incur as a result of the labeling, all the while suing small family-owned farmers for patent infringements. The health and best interest of the public and individual consumers is clearly not on their agenda! Before casting your ballot, consider the sources of your information.

Consider this position:

“As health care professionals, Washington’s nurses want everyone to have information to make important decisions about their health. It is ’informed consent’. That’s why we support labeling of genetically engineered foods. The more information our patients and we have to better trace potential allergens, toxins and the food supply chain the better. This information allows our patients to make the best decisions for their health.” –Judy Huntington, MN, RN, Executive Director of Washington State Nurses Association
