I retired last year after teaching in the Ocean Beach School District for 25 years.
Over those years, I have become aware of the high-risk status of our children. At least 65 percent of our school population live below the poverty level and are at risk for doing poorly in school. We have a history of suicides at the high school, a substantial drop-out rate, teen pregnancies and a high percentage of alcohol and drug use, both in our schools and in our communities.
I see a glaring and immediate need to help the many children sitting on a fence trying to decide what their future will bring. I am eager to form a non-profit organization in order to seek grant money for the purpose of bringing dynamic motivational speakers to our schools (for all ages, not just for the high school students).
On Tuesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. the first of our planned monthly meetings will be held at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 "N" Place in Seaview. I invite you to attend, as a show of support, to receive any additional information and to learn how you might be a part of turning our children's lives around. Successful youth play a major role in the success of an entire community.
