On Feb. 8, Bette and I are asking you to vote “yes” on the three-year replacement Maintenance and Operation Levy and the Technology Levy. These are not new taxes.

Levies bridge the gap between what the state pays for education and what it actually costs to operate schools. Ocean Beach School District is preparing a three-year Maintenance and Operation Levy of $1.52 per thousand of assessed valuation. This is about half the amount requested by nearby school districts.

The levy would continue funding for important programs and student services including staff, transportation, maintenance and custodial staff, textbooks, vocational education and all extra-curricular activities.

Providing our young people with a solid education is critical for their future as well as for the future of our state and country. As a former senator and local businessman for 60 years, I know how critical it is to support our schools.

Please remember to vote for the school levies on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The future is in our hands.
