I'm astonished over Doris Parks' statement in last week's Chinook Observer that the average woman could wrestle a bear "and win hands down."

Even if I weighed as much as the average female bear I would still question that statement. Those who know me know I only have fingernails - no claws, and teeth, no fangs. At no point in my life could I have outrun a bear. Though my brother, survivor of our childhood battles, describes me as being tough and wiry, I truly know I am no match for a bear.

I have bears on my property from time to time - one half-charged my dog, who wisely retreated, as did I ... because we're really smart.
