I was present at an event on the evening of March 6 that I think needs to be sung about — it was the evening of Ilwaco High School performance groups: orchestra, chorus and jazz band, at the Liberty Theater.

First, thanks to the Liberty for providing the space so that all donations can be used to support future activities, that alone is worthy of note, but is only a starting point. The showing of community spirit continued as the audience filed in, adding to the donation pot as they came. Given the population of the towns involved and the number of students attending the school, the showing of mastery of various musical styles was impressive in itself. But in addition to the skills, the caring among students and between them and their leader, Rachel Lake, was also a joy to behold.

I grew up in a “small” town (by East Coast standards) and was involved in the music programs there. There was never as great participation as was shown at this performance, and I understand that there were several missing due to illness.

My congratulations to all who participated, and my wish that next year the Peninsula population not directly connected to the school be made more aware of this activity ahead of time. I would like all to have a chance to hear and see the joy and the skills that together Ms. Lake and the students produce.
