Turn off the lights, Surfside — there's a new covenant coming:

Surfside HOA members, please be aware of the new proposed lighting covenant!

The only way to obtain the new document is to go to the Surfsideonline.org site, the “official Surfside site.”

There you will see under Oct. 25, 2019 proposed changes to the lighting covenant. Click on that! You will then be able to view and print the new document. Also you can see the pictures of approved and non-approved outdoor light fixtures.

In my opinion the first line sets the tone for the rest of the document:

2.17 Exterior lighting and signs: 1) Prevent excessive illumination, and 4) protect a dark nighttime sky and visual environment for Surfside lots located between the ocean and those with J Place addresses.

My concern is, whose opinion is going to determine this? If this becomes the new lighting covenant, how many compliance officers will it take to enforce this?

The board of trustees has the authority to vote this in, not the members.

Please be sure to either attend the hearing Jan. 18, at 9 a.m. in the Surfside office or send the board an email or letter to express your feelings on this new very controlling covenant.

If you want a compliance officer patrolling at night checking if your lights are in compliance, this won’t concern you, but I sure don’t want to live in that atmosphere. I’m trying to get this information out to the members, as in my opinion the Surfside board done little or nothing to inform the membership about this change.
