ILWACO - Nine-year-old Brenden Greenfield made an incredible 21 out of 25 free throw attempts at the annual Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday at the Ocean Beach School gymnasium. Brenden was the top sharpshooter in the contest.

Young Greenfield, who won the 8-9 year-old division last year and came within one "make" of going to the state competition, led all three dozen competitors. Greenfield will represent Peninsula and Naselle shooters in regional competition Jan. 31 at Mark Morris High School in Longview, as will Elleigh and Matt Kaino, Alexia Wirkkala, Patrick Whealdon and Dawnielle Childers - each won his or her age bracket in the local hoop shoot. Should any of the winners not be able to compete for any reason, the runner-up will travel to Longview to shoot.

Matt Kaino won the 12-13 age division by hitting on 19 of 25 charity tosses, his second consecutive victory at that level. Alexia Wirkkala won the 10-11 title this year after winning the 8-9 division last season. She fell just short of a state victory last year in the Hoop Shoot as a nine-year-old.

The competitors shoot 25 free throws, unless there is a tie, in which they shoot five shots each until the tie is broken.

The Long Beach Elks provided hot dogs and soft drinks for the competitors and parents at the trophy presentation following the Hoop Shoot.

Ilwaco High School boys C-squad players who helped with the competition were Anthony Wirkkala, Mike Huitt, Junior Talancon, Cory Padgett, Paul Blaylock, Mike Lambert, and Colton and Cody Chalker.
