ILWACO After the lead had changed hands a remarkable 19 times going into the final period, the Fishermen turned the tide one last time, going on a 17-0 run to put away Toledo 57-45 in Trico League action at home Tuesday, Jan. 11. The Fishermen were down by five with 7:01 to play and trailed 43-40 inside five minutes.
Patrick Whealdon knocked down a three off an out-of-bounds play to knot the contest at 43-43 with 4:29 remaining. Then it was Karl Oman sinking a pair of foul shots, Whealdon dropping a jumper in the key, and Oman with a coast-to-coast layup off a steal and the count was 49-43 with 2:22 left.
Bobby Byrd closed out the game with a pair of clutch field goals in the paint and Whealdon and Oman both knocked down a pair of foul shots to ice the victory in the waning minutes. We went to a couple of different zone defenses and we made the plays in the fourth period and they didnt, Kip Meinhardt said. Toledo played the best defense of any team weve faced this year, but they didnt shoot well the fourth quarter.
The Fishermen had but two turnovers the second half, while Toledo missed 13 straight shots in the final frame of the pivotal league contest. Kyle Breckinridge and Byrd each scored 14 and Oman and Whealdon added 13 to the balanced attack. Oman dished out nine assists and Breckinridge pulled down a dozen rebounds and Byrd snared eight boards. Ryan Kukula hit a trey in the first period to give Ilwaco its first lead of the contest.
Ilwaco was 19-48 from the floor for 40 percent and was deadly from the line, going 15-18 for 83 percent. Toledo were 19-56 from the field for a chilly 34 percent, matching the temperature outside, and they made 3-5 from the charity stripe. The Fishermen out-rebounded the visitors 37-31 and both teams had but nine turnovers. Ilwaco committed eight fouls to 17 for Toledo.
Ilwaco is now 6-0 in the Trico and improves to 10-2, while Toledo is 3-2 in league play and 7-5 overall.
