LONG BEACH - Despite the wet, grey weather that arrived last week, so did another sign of spring on the Peninsula, the sound of baseballs slapping leather mitts and the ping of the bat. Some 23 students from Ilwaco High School took to the diamond last week as spring sports practices began for area teams Monday. Since a number of these players were
shooting hoops and putting on a full-court press just two weeks ago as basketball season came to an end, it was time to get back in touch with some of the finer points of baseball, including fielding, hitting basics and bunting practice. Ilwaco opens their season Thursday, March 13 in a 4 p.m. home game against Astoria at Rutherford Field in Long Beach. There will be a full preview of the team in next week's issue.
