NASELLE — Center Jacob Eaton stretched Firm Foundation’s zone beyond its breaking point with a 10-point first quarter that included two three-pointers, putting Naselle on its way to a 65-24 home win Tuesday over the Eagles.
In the opening minute, Eaton scored from the high post and on a corner three. He added a steal and basket to give him the Comets’ first seven points as they took a 7-5 lead. Another three from the corner by Eaton made it 16-5 after a quarter. By halftime, Naselle led 31-14, led by Eaton’s 16 points on seven of nine shooting.
Steals fueled the Comets’ offense in the second and third quarters. Jimmy Strange intercepted a pass and fed Ethan Lindstrom for a bucket and a 21-5 second-quarter lead. Antonio Nolan followed shortly afterward by stealing an inbounds pass and hitting the layup. Cole Dorman pounced on an unguarded dribble in the back-court and laid it in to make it 27-10. Dorman opened the third quarter with an immediate steal, leading to two free throws for Eaton, and the Comets ended up scoring 13 of their 15 points that quarter on steals. The Eagles committed 38 turnovers on the night to just 12 for Naselle.
Late in the game, Firm Foundation could not keep Jimmy Strange out of the lane. Strange thrived in the fast break, on his way to scoring all 13 of his points in the final nine minutes. He had four steals on the night.
