MONTESANO — The Bulldogs of Montesano beat Ilwaco 73-44 on Friday, Dec. 22, dominating the game near the basket. The Bulldogs, with a big, powerful, athletic, long-armed lineup, gave Ilwaco’s offense little room to maneuver. On offense, they generated high-percentage shots, doing much of their scoring in the post and in the fast-break.
Monte led 30-12 by the early second quarter. Seth Dierkop and Shaydon Farmer scored in low, while L.J. Valley knocked down two three-pointers and scored on a steal.
For Ilwaco, the one bright spot in the first half was Reese Tynkila. The 6’1” forward showed the power and athleticism to take on the Bulldogs’ strong frontline, scoring 10 of Ilwaco’s 13 second-quarter points. The Bulldogs led 37-21 at the break.
Early in the third quarter, John Glenn hit a three-pointer, Monte’s Sam Winter followed with an air-ball, and Tynkila had an aggressive baseline drive to score through contact, cutting the lead to 39-27. Another three by Glenn cut the margin to 41-30. Calvin Baze found Alex Kaino slipping away from the defense and fed him for a basket to make it 44-32.
Trevor Ridgeway answered with a bank shot in the lane. The Bulldogs followed with three straight three-point plays by challenging Ilwaco inside and forcing contact, giving them a commanding 55-32 lead with only 2:25 remaining in the third quarter.
Farmer led the Bulldogs with 21 points. For Ilwaco, Tenyson Ramsey scored 13 points, Tynkila had 12 and Glenn scored nine.
