CASTLE ROCK — The Rockets jetted to a 25-0 first half lead and never looked back on their way to a 38-8 win over Ilwaco Friday night.

“We should have been much more focused,” said Tom Odneal. “They had a fake punt that helped them score and then the kickoff to start the second half — that was a bad one right there.”

Jack Kaino provided a boost to Ilwaco’s cause with 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he rambled for a five-yard touchdown. IHS quarterback Eric McMillan passed to fullback Tom Odneal for the two-point conversion.

Ilwaco ran for 125 yards and McMillan threw for 92, but Castle Rock’s ground attack amassed 329 yards, including 121 yards on just four carries for Rocket QB Mason Klingberg. Castle Rock also had over 100 return yards.

The Rockets had taken the lead 12-0 on first-period touchdown runs of four yards by Nate Williamson and one yard by Tanner Catlin. Receiver Shawn Godinho caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Klingberg. The QB also ran 41 yards for another touchdown before halftime.

On the first play after halftime, the Rockets Zac Akesson raced 93 yards on the kickoff return for a touchdown.

The hosts tacked on another touchdown in the third period when Klingberg ran for a 49-yard score.

“The first half we didn’t have very good field position because we did not execute well on offense,” said McMillan. “It was sad that we didn’t realize what was going on as a unit and not everyone would pick up on what we had done in practice. Castle Rock just ran leads, tosses or counters and we couldn’t stop them from making long drives.”

Both McMillan and Odneal ran for 41 yards, Keishi Thompson picked up 27 and Kaino had 25 yards. Austin Woodby caught a season-high six passes for 40 yards, Brandon Sparks snared two for 23 yards and Terry and Riki Thompson also had receptions.

“Jack Kaino is getting more opportunity at tail back and running well,” said coach Kevin McNulty. “We will have to find more ways for Tommy to carry the football. A couple of their linemen dominated us up front and that was the difference in the football game.”

Castle Rock is now 3-4 in the Trico and 3-5 for the year, while Ilwaco falls to 0-7 in league and 0-8 overall.

The Fishermen will wrap up their season at home this Friday when they host Kalama (6-2). The Chinooks are currently in third place in the Trico League and are coming off a 56-12 win over Seton Catholic last week.
